A vote of thanks to Graham for sorting this one out.

The daft thing is, we go through this performance *every
year*, as vacation time approaches.

In fact, in a big organisation, it may well not be the
person to blame, but their IT department just putting
employees mail 'on hold' while they are absent.

Of course, the last people to understand the ramifications
of a looping auto-respond on a list such as this, would be
the IT Department ;-)
