Re: arsclist Fwd: Posting to the List for equipment advice

Hi, Curtis,

I am a user and fan of Samplitude--I think it's wonderful, but has a steep learning curve.

I LOVE the virtual modes. I really miss them in Diamond Cut Millennium and use that as a noise reduction and repair tool and still do final assembly in Samplitude Producer 2496 v6.0

If your sound recordings are average oral histories, I would suspect that CD quality is fine.

I second (third?) the CardDeluxe. I'm considering buying two for 4-channels.

I like Dell computers.

I'm not familiar with the Tascam 302 and the Otari MX-5050 is a competent machine.

I'm always in a quandary as to what to suggest. Nakamichi Dragon (one just went for $600 on eBay) and a Studer A820 would be my first choices for cassettes and reels. I use Sony APR-5003Vs for 1-2 channels on 1/4-inch and an Otari MTR-12 for 3-4 channels on 1/4 and 1/2-inch tape.

You can look at an almost current equipment list on my Web site at http://www.richardhess.com/tape/equipment.htm

I think I even have a wiring diagram there of my "kludge" setup--works for me--you might get some ideas from it (which is why I posted it).

Cheers,

Richard

My name is Curtis Peoples and I am interested in obtaining feedback
about various equipment we are planning to purchase. I work at the
Vietnam Archive at Texas Tech University. We have obtained federal
funding in order place all of our non-copyright material on the internet
for public acces. We have begun scanning documents, photos, etc... and
are getting ready to transfer our sound recordings from analog to
digital, for both web access and preservation.

I am presently looking at the Otari MX-5050BIII
Tascam 302 Dual Cassette Deck
ProTools and Samplitude Producer 2496 v6.0
I also need advice on the best sound card and storage devices (Will CDR
be good enough)
The archive prefers PC over Mac.

Any advice and suggestions are greatly appreciated
