FULL-TIME AND HOURLY LIBRARIANS

There are several vacancies available, including
one full-time position in Special
Collections.


WHEN APPLYING:  Please indicate on the City's

full-time or hourly positions, or both.

FULL-TIME OPPORTUNITIES (SALARY: $3,620 -
$4,400/MO.)

SPECIAL COLLECTIONS/ARCHIVIST:  The Special
Collections Department of the Thousand Oaks
Library is home to one of the largest archival
collections on the history of radio
broadcasting in the United States (The American
Radio Archives), as well as an extensive local
history collection.  Materials include books,
manuscripts, photographs, documents, pamphlets,
scripts, sound recordings, and realia.  Duties
include collection development; cataloging;
archival processing; preparation of finding aids
and other printed and electronic promotional
materials; donor relations; supervision of
paraprofessional staff and provision of research
assistance to scholars and the general public.
ALA accredited MLS is required and archival
experience or course work is preferred, but
specialized training beyond MLS may be available
for professionals interested in this area of
librarianship.

HOURLY OPPORTUNITIES ($20.88 - $25.39/HR.)

Hourly librarians perform reference, and reader's
advisory assistance to the public at the
Reference Desk, Children's Information Desk, and
Branch Library Information Desk utilizing
print, electronic, and on-line resources.  May
assist with the selection and maintenance of
the collection, indexing of the local newspaper,
and children's programming.  Will provide
telephone and e-mail reference service.  Performs
related duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:

KNOWLEDGE OF:  Current trends, principles and
practices in public library services for adults
and children; principles and methods of collection
development; modern library management
theory and practice; general and specialized
reference and bibliographic sources for both
adults and children; cataloging procedures and
practices; indexing procedures and modern
technology practices including the use of standard
on-line research sources and the Internet;
readers' advisory methodology and theory;
reference interview techniques and procedures, and

current publishing trends.

ABILITY TO: Establish and maintain good rapport
with the general public and other staff;
prepare specialized bibliographies and
pathfinders; interpret library policies to the
public;
effectively evaluate library services and
programs; communicate clearly, both orally and in
writing.  Courteously and effectively provide
service for library patrons of all ages.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:  Possession of an
ALA-accredited Master's Degree in Library Science.

At least one year of public library experience is
highly desirable.  A valid Class C
California driver's license required.

Thousand Oaks, a city of more than 117,600 people,
is conveniently located 39 miles west of
Los Angeles, 27 miles east of Ventura, and 12
miles inland from the Pacific Ocean.  The City
of Thousand Oaks lies within the Conejo Valley, a
picturesque, mountain-rimmed plateau. 900
feet above sea level at the Ventura/Los Angeles
County Line.  Average temperatures range
between 65-75 degrees during summer months and
53-69 degrees during the winter months; average
rainfall is 14.98 inches per year.
