Earliest complete opera recording

Dear members:

I always thought the first complete opera recordings were made around 1906/07 and consisted of Carmen and other similar stuff. Now I came across a note in Lewis Foreman: Systematic discography. London: Clive Bingley 1974, p. 13 that the first complete opera recording was done already in 1903 and featured Verdi's Ernani on 40 single-sided Italian HMV discs. Can anyone verify this information and supply me with more details about this recording?
Thanks
Martin Elste
