Goal
This seminar will provide the most current information about the use of adhesives in conservation, providing conservators with a sound platform to make informed choices of suitable adhesives.
Description
This is an advanced seminar designed to give participants a new appreciation for scientific research by reviewing work on poly(vinyl acetate), acrylic, and vinyl acetate/ethylene copolymer adhesives. The aging properties of many commercially available adhesives with respect to pH, emission of harmful volatiles, flexibility, cohesive strength, yellowing gloss, removability, and the effect that additives play will be discussed. This information will be presented in interactive lectures with slide presentations. Working in groups, participants will carry out exercises based on the lectures, and experiment with adhesives.
