Position: Preservation Officer.

Responsible To: Associate Director for Science and Technical Services

Job Summary: Provides the expertise, services and necessary direction to enable the Libraries to successfully preserve its archival and library materials, including preparation, conservation and reproduction. Responsible for overall development and administration of the University of Florida Libraries preservation program for all material formats in all holding locations in support of the University's academic and research programs. Specifically responsible for the management of the Commercial Bindery Preparations, Conservation, and Reprogaphics Units, as well as Brittle Book, Environmental Monitoring, and Disaster Recovery Programs. Collaborates with the Libraries' staff to ensure that both the Libraries' staff and users are acquainted with preservation programmatic goals, objectives and plans.

Responsibilities:

  1. Organizes and manages the Preservation Program, including defining needs, establishing goals, objectives, and plans; assigning, training, supervising and evaluating allocated staff; preparing budgets and evaluating resources allocated by the Libraries in support of the Preservation Program.
  2. Collaborates with bibliographers and selectors, through the Collection Services Management Group (CSMG) to ascertain collection management preservation priorities and teaches collection development librarians and staff appropriate preservation techniques and selection criteria.
  3. Organizes, conducts, and advertises patron awareness programs in collaboration with the Public Services Coordinating Group (PSCG) and Access Services staff to ensure a high public awareness of the Libraries' Preservation Program.
  4. Organizes, in collaboration with the Library Development Officer, external funding requests including grant applications and other proposals directed toward both the public and private sectors.
  5. Acts as the Libraries' Preservation Program representative at the national, regional, state and local levels.
  6. Provides consultation and assistance to the Library and University community in preservation emergencies, including the development and maintenance of an emergency preparedness program, and for the University Libraries, in particular, in collaboration with the Access Services Division. May include provision of similar assistance to other institutions on a limited basis.
  7. Collaborates with technical services librarians, through the Science and Technical Services Management Group (STSMG), to facilitate acquisition and cataloging of preservation photocopies and microforms, as well as to define policies and procedures for use of technical systems to support preservation activities.
  8. Collaborates with commercial bindery preparations staff throughout the Libraries to ensure adequate binding and preservation of unbound and damaged materials.
  9. Collaborates with the Systems Office regarding the preservation and storage of MRDF and other magnetic media.
  10. Implements the Affirmative Action Program of the University of Florida within the Preservation Program staff.
