Désiré van Monckhoven provides an extremely thorough examination on the history, technology and science of optics as understood in the mid-19th Century. His work is beautifully and copiously illustrated, especially his Chapter 7 entitled "Photographic Cameras, Lenses, etc." His chapter on stereo photography is a particularly valuable as albumen stereo cards were made in huge numbers from the 1850's.
