EFFECTS OF ENCLOSURE PAPERS AND PAPERBOARDS CONTAINING LIGNINS ON PHOTOGRAPHIC IMAGE STABILITY

DANIEL M. BURGE, JAMES M. REILLY, & DOUGLAS W. NISHIMURA

6 CONCLUSIONS

The following conclusions about paper and paperboard enclosures were drawn:

  • Fully delignified wood-pulp papers should be as safe as cotton papers for the storage of photographic images.
  • Wood extractives not removed during pulping and bleaching are potential sources of silver image degradation.
  • Lignins are a source of gelatin staining.
  • Harmful pollutants from lignins-containing paper products can cross air spaces to damage photographic images.
