TYVEK® IN DER BUCHRESTAURIERUNG

Abstract: In the field of book conservation many important changes have taken place in the last few decades. The introduction of non-traditional methods that intervened less with the original structure was part of a transition in the approach of book conservators. In the wake of this change in approach, new materials were introduced. One of these was Tyvek®, a synthetic material with many characteristics that are suitable for conservation purposes. Although only used as a material for storage at first it is now applied much more widely as a conservation material. Combined with modern techniques it allows for time saving treatments with fine aesthetic results. This article will describe the possible use of Tyvek® in the treatment of nineteenth century collections and much older limp parchment bindings, illustrated with examples of treated books in the Leiden University Library. But, it will also address the worries some conservators have about this synthetic material. Therefore the characteristics of Tyvek® will be looked at in general and more specifically with regard to difficulties concerning the dyeing and adhering the material. On the whole its suitability for conservation purposes will be discussed. The positive results of mechanical strength and colour stability after artificial ageing and light exposure including UV may help to qualify this material as a useful conservation product in book conservation treatments.
Zusammenfassung: In den letzten Jahrzehnten haben im Bereich der Buchrestaurierung viele wichtige Veränderungen stattgefunden, u.a. die Einführung nicht-traditioneller Methoden, welche nur begrenzt in die originale Struktur eingreifen. Im Zuge dieses Wandels wurden neue Materialien eingeführt, wie z.B. Tyvek®, ein synthetisches Material mit vielen Eigenschaften, die es für den Einsatz in der Restaurierung geeignet machen. Obwohl vorerst nur als Verpackungsmaterial verwendet, wird es derzeit viel breiter eingesetzt. In Kombination mit modernen Techniken ermöglicht es zeitsparende Behandlungen mit ästhetisch befriedigenden Ergebnissen. Anhand restaurierter Bücher der Universitätsbibliothek Leiden beschreibt dieser Artikel den möglichen Einsatz von Tyvek� bei der Behandlung von Sammlungsbeständen des 19. Jahrhunderts sowie viel älterer Pergamentbände. Die Befürchtungen einiger Restauratoren in Bezug auf dieses synthetische Material werden angesprochen. Auf die Eigenschaften von Tyvek® wird eingegangen, insbesondere im Hinblick auf die Schwierigkeiten es zu färben und zu kleben. Seine Eignung für die Verwendung in der Restaurierung wird diskutiert. Die positiven Untersuchungsergebnisse der mechanischen Stärke und Farbstabilität nach künstlicher Alterung und Lichtalterung mit UV können dazu beitragen, Tyvek® als nützliches Produkt für die Buchrestaurierung einzuschätzen.

Abstract: The present study deals with unexplained and possibly correlated phenomena of browning and textured imprints within the print space of incunabula from the collection of the University Library of Graz. A possibly common cause for both phenomena has been investigated. Based on descriptions from corresponding literature, a hypothesis ascribing the browning as well as the textured imprints to partial moistening during the printing process was postulated. To support this hypothesis, the overall occurrence of both phenomena in the incunabula collection in connection to their production was investigated, two incunabula showing browning and textured imprints were examined in detail and simulation experiments with artificially aged paper samples were carried out.
Zusammenfassung: Die vorliegende Arbeit beschüftigt sich mit zwei bis dato unerklärten und vermutlich miteinander in Verbindung stehenden Phänomenen, nämlich den Verbräunungen und texturierten Abdrücken im Bereich des Satzspiegels in Inkunabeln der Karl-Franzens-Universitätsbibliothek. Es wird den Entstehungsursachen und einem möglichen Zusammenhang zwischen diesen beiden Phänomenen auf den Grund gegangen. Basierend auf Beschreibungen aus der einschlägigen Literatur wurde die Hypothese entwickelt, daß sowohl die Verbräunungen als auch die texturierten Abdrücke durch eine partielle Befeuchtung der Papiere verursacht wurden. Um diese zu überprüfen, wurde das Auftreten beider Phänomene im Zusammenhang mit der Herstellung der Bücher verifiziert und zusätzlich zwei repräsentative Exemplare mit Verbräunungen und texturierten Abdrücken untersucht. Weiters wurden Experimente an selbst geschöpften, künstlich gealterten Papieren durchgeführt.
