Three Versions of Knut Hamsun's Play 'In the Grip of Life'

Abstract: The National Library of Norway has three almost identical sets of the manuscript of 'In the Grip of Life', a play Knut Hamsun (1859-1952) finished writing in 1910. Only two were catalogued in 1943, one as an original manuscript and one as a copy. The library's conservation staff was asked to investigate the correctness of the catalogue entry and to determine the status of the third set. The Norwegian playwright's 150th birthday anniversary has stirred new interest in the controversial author's life and creative writing. The author's sympathy for Nazism and open admiration of Adolf Hitler had cost his reputation dearly, despite his earlier award of the Nobel Prize for literature. In 1932, the author donated many of his manuscripts to the library of the University of Oslo. Today they constitute an important part of the core collections of The National Library of Norway. In the University of Oslo Library's octavo catalogue of manuscripts, it is listed as nr 1389: 'Knut Hamsun. In the Grip of Life. Play (1910). Finished manuscript. 267 loose leaves + title page and list of persons. A complete copy of the original is included.' This concise entry does not indicate the existence of three sets but does provide important clues. One of the three should be an original and one an old copy. Research into the author's biography led a librarian from the Manuscript Collection to discover that the manuscript had been copied by hectography. How many copies where there and how were they made? What happened to the original? Both the copying method and the three sets of the play manuscripts were examined which revealed that one differs substantially from the rest. It was identified as original. All three items have special preservation requirements
Zusammenfassung: Die norwegische Nationalbibliothek besitzt drei nahezu identische Exemplare des Manuskriptes „Vom Teufel Geholt” - ein Schauspiel, das Knut Hamsun (1859-1952) 1910 vollendet hatte. Nur zwei dieser Exemplare wurden 1943 katalogisiert - eines als Originalhandschrift, das andere als Kopie. Die Restauratoren der Bibliothek waren gefragt, die Richtigkeit des betreffenden Katalogeintrags zu prüfen und den Status des dritten Exemplars zu untersuchen. Der 150. Geburtstag des norwegischen Schriftstellers weckte erneut Interesse am Leben und kreativen Schreiben des umstrittenen Autors. Hamsuns Sympathie für den Nationalsozialismus und seine Bewunderung für Adolf Hitler kosteten ihn seine Reputation - trotz des zuvor erhaltenen Literatur-Nobelpreises. 1932 stiftete der Autor viele seiner Manuskripte der Osloer Universitätsbibliothek. Heute gehören sie zu den bedeutendsten Werken der Sammlungen der norwegischen Nationalbibliothek. Der Octavo-Katalog der Manuskripte der Osloer Universitätsbibliothek verzeichnet als No. 1389 „Knut Hamsun. Vom Teufel Geholt. Schauspiel. (1910). Vollendetes Manuskript. 267 lose Blätter + Titelseite und Personenliste. Eine vollständige Kopie des Originales ist beigefügt.”. Dieser knappe Eintrag deutet zwar nicht auf die Existenz eines dritten Exemplares hin, gibt jedoch bedeutende Hinweise: Eines ist das Original und eines eine alte Kopie. Bei Nachforschungen in Hamsuns Biographie entdeckte ein Bibliothekar der Handschriftenabteilung, daß die Kopien mittels Hektographie angefertigt wurden. Wie viele Kopien wurden hergestellt und wie wurden sie gemacht? Was geschah mit dem Original? Die Kopiertechnik und die drei Exemplare wurden untersucht. Eines unterscheidet sich grundsätzlich von den beiden anderen und wurde als Original identifiziert. Alle drei Exemplare bedürfen spezifischer Konservierungsmaßnahmen.

Abstract: Book conservation has only quite recently been acknowledged as a specialist conservation discipline. For a long time it was a continuation of paper conservation, and before that book conservation or restoration belonged to the domain of bookbinders. In the course of this transition much experience and knowledge was exchanged through publications and workshops which stimulated development. But now that the discipline has professionalized there appears to be less interchange and sharing of information. This stagnation seems to be inconsistent with the fundamental changes that mark the professional development of the last decades. This article aims to provide an overview of the developments which resulted in the professionalization of book conservation and to describe the current state of affairs, with a strong focus on the Dutch situation. Recently developed techniques and modern materials will be compared with more traditional methods and the reason for the introduction of these techniques will be explained. Of course developments have not come to an end and factors like digitization, changing policies within libraries and archives and the education of conservators will further influence the field of book conservation. These issues will be considered, too.
Zusammenfassung: Buchrestaurierung ist erst seit kurzer Zeit als Spezialdisziplin anerkannt. Lange Zeit war es eine erweiterte Form der Papierrestaurierung, und davor war es eine Domäne der Buchbinder. Im Laufe dieser Wechsel wurden Erfahrungen und Wissen durch Publikationen und Fachgruppen ausgetauscht, was wiederum neue Entwicklungen angestoßen hat. Jetzt, da sich diese Disziplin professionalisiert hat, findet leider immer weniger Fachaustausch statt. Diese Stagnation reflektiert jedoch in keinster Weise die fundamentalen Veränderungen der vergangenen Jahrzehnte. Der vorliegende Artikel zielt darauf, einen Überblick über diejenigen Entwicklungen zu geben, die in der jetzigen Professionalisierung der Buchrestaurierung resultieren, und den derzeitigen Wissensstand, insbesondere in den Niederlanden, zu beschreiben. Neu entwickelte Techniken und moderne Materialien werden mit traditionelleren Methoden verglichen, wobei Gründe für diese Veränderungen dargelegt werden. Natürlich sind diese Entwicklungen noch nicht an ihrem Ende, und neue Faktoren, wie z.B. Digitalisierung, veränderte Grundsätze innerhalb von Bibliotheken und Archiven sowie die Ausbildung von Restauratoren werden das Gebiet der Buchrestaurierung weiterhin beeinflussen. Auch diese Punkte werden diskutiert.
