SOS! launched the Conservation Treatment Awards program in 1998. The matching grants funded the conservation of community-owned artistically and historically significant sculpture. The program was funded by Target Stores and the National Endowment for the Arts.
Applicants were required to be nonfederal government entities or private, nonprofit organizations. A review panel of experienced professionals in the fields of art history, conservation, and public-art administration critiqued the applications and made recommendations for funding based on the significance of the sculpture to be conserved, the urgency of the need for conservation, the ability of the applicant to carry out the project, and the applicant’s plans for public awareness. Ongoing maintenance of the artworks is expected.
