Utah
30 Beehive State volunteers reported on 190 outdoor sculptures, nearly half of which were found in Salt Lake City. The Seagull Monument by Mahonri Mackintosh Young is a well-known sculpture in Temple Square, Salt Lake City. The sculpture represents a piece of Mormon history, when seagulls saved the pioneers' crop from hordes of crickets. Utah's history can also be seen in works such as Gary Prazen's Miner Memorial in Castle Gate, which honors the 200 miners who lost their lives in the Scofield Mine Disaster in 1900; and J.A. Packer's Jim Brigder Monument. The monument commemorates the local traders and trappers active in the area in the early 1800s. The work was made possible with the help of the Boy Scouts of America, among other organizations.
