Maryland

The State of Maryland was a model participant in the American Revolution, the War of 1812 and the Civil War. They acquired their first nickname the Old Line State for their bravery in the Battle of Long Island during the American Revolution. A second nickname, the Free State, was earned during the Civil War, because they remained in the Union and kept the General Robert E. Lee's troops from marching north during the Battle of Antietam in 1862.

Over half of Maryland's 679 sculptures need a conservator's touch to treat their poor condition.
