Marysville
Pony Express Rider, Richard Bergen, 1985
This is a sculpture of a Pony Express rider and his horse. The Pony Express was a mail
service that used horses to relay mail between Missouri and California. Before the Pony
Express, mail had to be transported by ship or wagon trains, which took a long time. With
the Pony Express, mail could be sent faster because the rider changed horses every ten to
fifteen miles so the horses would not get tired and slow down. After the rider had covered
a certain distance, the mail was turned over to another rider. This system is much like a
modern day relay race as seen in the summer Olympics or like one you may have played in
school!
