Grotto of the Redemption, Paul M. Dobberstein, 1912-1954
This is a marble statue of Eve. But where is this sculpture located? The background looks like a colorful cave or the surface of another planet! Mr. Dobberstein, the artist, has placed this sculpture in a grotto. A grotto is a structure made to look like a cave. One way to create a rough, cave-like surface is by imbedding objects like gems, rocks and stones into wet concrete. The concrete acts as a thick, heavy glue. If you look closely at the background of this picture you can see the colorful stones used to make this grotto.
