Wilmington
Admiral Samuel Francis du Pont by Laurt Thompson, 1884
The sculpture was originally placed in Washington, DC's Pacific Circle (now called Dupont
Circle) in 1884, but in 1920 the du Pont family had the statue moved to Wilmington.
Outdoor sculptures are moved for all kinds of reasons. Sometimes the sculpture is not safe
in its original location, so it is moved to protect it from vehicle traffic or the
weather. Other times, sculpture is moved because construction or change of use affects its
original place. In other cases, sculpture is moved by the owner or the owner's descendents
to bring the sculpture closer to their current location. Political wrangling is yet
another reason. Still, most of America's public sculpture stays put!
