Cleveland
Harvey Rice Monument (James G.C. Hamilton, 1899)
When young Harvey Rice arrived in Cleveland in 1825, he had three dollars in his pocket
and a recent college degree. The settlement had 400 residents. He was the town's teacher
and principal and later president of the school board. He helped pass a law that created
the school system in Ohio. Several other states copied his law. Below you can see the
monument before and after conservation treatment.
