New Mexico
New Mexico is the fifth largest state in size, and an abundance of 623 outdoor sculptures were surveyed. 100 volunteers reported on all 33 counties in the state. The success of New Mexico SOS! inspired the Albuquerque chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution to join forces with the City of Albuquerque Percent for Art Program to restore Auguste Leimbach's Madonna of the Trail. The sculpture in McClellan Park is one of 12 similar monuments that pay tribute to female pioneers.
Sante Fe artist Glenna Goodacre gained wide recognition as the sculptor of the Vietnam Women's Memorial in Washington, DC, but is known locally for creating Park Place in the Albuquerque Museum sculpture garden. Park Place depicts a group of people enjoying their lunch breaks outside. There is a young woman stretching her legs getting ready for a jog and a man playing with his dog. Goodacre's intention is to create works that are fun and engaging, that viewers could contemplate over time rather than just walk by.
