Reliefs on the Memorial Bell Tower, Peter and Norman Rockwell, early 1960s
This relief panel is one of four showing women in various roles during wars in which
America fought. These relief panels were made by a father and son! First, drawings were
made by famous artist Norman Rockwell. Next, his son Peter made relief sculptures based on
those drawings. A relief is a sculpture that has been sculpted on just three sides. This
panel shows five women in uniforms from the branches of the armed services: Army, Navy,
Marine Corps, Air Corps, and Coast Guard.
