Muskegon
Alma Mater, Lorado Taft, 1929
Located on the campus of Muskegon High School, this sculpture is a memorial to Charles Hackley, a businessman whose contributions to the City of Muskegon were incredibly generous. He was a big advocate of improving the education system in his town, which explains the location of this sculpture. Dont rub your eyes thoughthe statue of Alma Mater isnt supposed to look like Mr. Hackley! He is pictured lower down on the monument in a smaller portrait. In 2002 the Muskegon Board of Education decided the sculpture needed to be cleaned and conserved, and now she looks better than ever! Are there any sculptures at or around your school? Do you know why they are there?
