Louisiana

43 Pelican State volunteers, including students from Louisiana State University, Centenary College, and Dillard University, worked together to report on 541 outdoor sculptures. The state was named Louisiana in honor of Louis XIV of France, and its nickname refers to the eastern brown pelican. In Marksville, on Highway 1 at the city limits, you can see Broken Wagon Wheels by Rudolph R. Haydel. As the title suggests, the sculpture consists of two huge broken wagon wheels each mounted on a cylindrical base. The artist developed the wagon wheels to become an emblem of the city. Marksville was founded when a pioneer's wagon broke down and a trading post was established.
