Joan of Arc (Emmanuel Fremiet, 1924)
This statue memorializes Joan of Arc, who at age 16, armed with divine inspiration, led
her French countrymen to victory over the English in the Battle of Orleans. She was
condemned as a witch and burned at the stake by the English at age 19. Nearly 500 years
later she was declared a saint by the Roman Catholic Church. The statue depicts Joan as
she prepares to ride into Orleans on horseback. Once covered with gold, the statue now
suffers from extensive corrosion.
