When is it acceptable to restore the original?

• Usually will get a better copy when transferring from the original. What ethical issues are involved in "improving" an original?
• Should the original be kept as close as possible to the condition in which it was received and enhancements made only on a copy?
  • - If the repair is observable, should a copy of the untouched original transfer be retained?
